10mm Ammo | Fenix Ammunition

10mm ammo is the magnum cartridge of the semi auto world, when it is actually loaded to spec. We take pride in loading our 180gr FMJ to true full power velocity per the original SAAMI specifications: expect 1,300 FPS from a 5" barrel, in 250 round packages. The 180gr FXP Hollowpoint matches it at 1,300 FPS for defense, pistol hunting, and dangerous game protection.

Full Power 10mm Ammo

10mm ammo earned its reputation by delivering magnum level performance from a semi automatic pistol. Many commercial loads are reduced below the performance that made the cartridge famous. Fenix loads its 180 grain FMJ and FXP ammunition to 1,300 FPS from a 5 inch barrel, preserving the full power character 10mm shooters expect.

10mm Ammo Options: FMJ and FXP

The 180 grain FMJ is the training option, packaged in 250 round quantities for range use and familiarization. The 180 grain FXP is the expanding option for defense, pistol hunting, and protection in the field. Both types of 10mm ammo use the same stated velocity so shooters can train with an FMJ load that closely matches the handling of the defensive load.

How 10mm Ammo Began

The 10mm Auto cartridge was developed in 1983 by a team that included Whit Collins, John Adams, Irving Stone, Jeff Cooper, and Norma AB. Their objective was to create a combat handgun cartridge that launched a heavier and wider bullet than the 9mm Luger while achieving greater velocity than the .45 ACP.

The original concept paired a 200 grain projectile with approximately 1,200 feet per second of velocity. This gave the new cartridge substantially more energy than the common service pistol cartridges of the period and established the performance standard that full power 10mm ammo is still measured against.

The Bren Ten and Early Popularity

Dornaus and Dixon Enterprises developed the Bren Ten pistol around the cartridge. The pistol became widely recognized after appearing in the television series Miami Vice, but early reliability, quality control, and magazine supply problems damaged its reputation. Dornaus and Dixon declared bankruptcy in 1986, leaving the future of 10mm ammunition uncertain.

Colt helped keep the cartridge alive with the Delta Elite, a Model 1911 adapted for 10mm Auto. The cartridge also attracted attention during the search for a more capable law enforcement service round following the 1986 FBI Miami shootout.

FBI Lite and the Development of .40 S&W

Although the FBI valued the penetration and terminal performance of 10mm ammo, full power ammunition produced more recoil than the agency wanted for broad service use. The bureau adopted a reduced power loading that became known as 10mm FBI or 10mm Lite.

Smith and Wesson later achieved similar reduced load performance with a shorter case that fit medium frame pistols. The resulting .40 S&W cartridge became widely adopted by law enforcement, while full power 10mm ammo continued as the higher velocity option.

Why Full Power 10mm Ammo Still Matters

Modern 10mm ammo has a dedicated following among shooters who want more velocity and energy than conventional service pistol cartridges provide. It is used for range training, personal defense, pistol hunting, and protection while hiking, camping, and hunting in areas where dangerous animals may be present.

For shooters who choose the cartridge for that performance, ammunition loaded to full power is central to its value. The Fenix collection brings its FMJ and FXP 10mm ammo together on one page so shoppers can compare the available loads and choose the appropriate option for training or field use.
